Dr. Y.V.Malla Reddy, Director of Accion Fraterna Ecology Centre. Working with farmers in Anantapur. The district is basically a drought prone district and a rain fed area. There are 3 good crops that have actually occurred over the last 10 years the rest of the crops have been failures, poor yields. What is essential in this region is that the farmers’ need to have is good crop insurance. The farmers need to be compensated when there is no good crop. Farmers need to be insured against the losses and in crisis. A comprehensive policy has to be in place to protect the farmers from the usual vagaries of crop losses, prices and marketing system.
